If you are a road cyclist in Colorado, you know one of the greatest challenges is sharing the road with cars. Although this isn’t a unique challenge to Colorado, we do have a useful tool for better understanding where dangerous intersections are and where accidents have happened on Western Colorado roads.
The Colorado Crash Map uses state automobile crash data to display Colorado crashes for 2010-2016 (currently) in 7 different categories; Distracted Driving, Alcohol Reported, Drugs Reported, Careless/Inattentive Driving, Aggressive Driving, Reckless/Negligent Driving, Failure to Yield. Each accident has information about the contributing causes, the number of fatalities, and the road.
Riding safe means more than simply knowing where accidents have happened in the past, but by using the Colorado Crash Map, road riders can plan their rides and routes with more info about what the driving community is like, where problem sections of road have been in the past, and areas to consider avoiding. Although Western Colorado isn’t without incident, the lower population density and large number of great road rides allows for more of a margin of safety.
On any road ride, considering riding with lights (day or night), using a bell, wear high visibility clothing, a good helmet, have a ride plan, and let others know about it and when you expect to be back. In addition to these common safety practiced, consider also adding checking the Colorado Crash Map while planning your route.
